Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has somehow admitted that Ethiopia were better than his team despite losing 1-0 to the South Africans in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, Johannesburg, on Tuesday evening.
Bafana Bafana got what mattered the most – the three points – as they continue to push for a place in the final qualifiers. Bafana Bafana won courtesy of an own goal by Ethiopia captain Getaneh Kebede.
“We tried to neutralise the midfield, but we didn’t really succeed. Therefore, the danger was always there,” Broos said.
“It was very difficult for us to keep the ball. We suffered a little bit. But on the other side, we could score on a set-piece. The most important thing we have the victory.”
Bafana Bafana are on top of Group G with 10 points from four games. They have won three matches and drawn once with Ghana’s Black Stars breathing heavily down their necks with nine points after registering three wins and a loss.
“We stay first in our group. That’s what we wanted to achieve after four games, but on the other side I have to say that it was very difficult for us because we were not strong enough to neutralise the very good midfield of this team of Ethiopia,” the Belgian remarked.
Meanwhile, Ethiopia coach Wubetu Abate said that they tried their best but failed.
“Firstly, I would like to say congratulations for Bafana for the win. We tried to control the game, I think for most of the match. On the attacking side we were not clinical,” Abate said.
