Hugo Broos and Ronwen Williams have spoken out after Bafana Bafana failed at the last hurdle in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers following a 1-0 loss to Ghana away at the Cape Coast Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Black Stars won the match courtesy of an Andre Ayew penalty, which he converted in the first half.
Bafana Bafana and the Black Stars had the same number of points and goal difference. The Ghanaians reached the last round of qualifiers because they scored more goals than Bafana Bafana.
“First of all, let me congratulate Ghana for qualification for the next round. On the other hand, I have to congratulate my team also because we played a very difficult game in very difficult circumstances,” Broos said.
“We played against an opponent that was very aggressive. The referee allowed them to play like that. It was difficult for us to have a good result here.”
Williams, meanwhile, revealed that he’s disappointed with the outcome of the match, which led to the end of the road for them in the qualifiers.
“Congratulations to Ghana. Obviously, disappointed. The last three months we worked so hard,” Williams said.
The Gqeberha-born goalkeeper insisted that they should not lose hope because of the failure to reach the final round of qualifiers.
“We are a fairly new team. So as much as we are disappointed, we need to keep our heads up. We’ve done so well,” he said.
“Ghana was very physical to us. We didn’t create too many clear cut chances. I’m saying that I’m proud of the boys. They put up hard work over the last few months.”
