One of the finest batsman to come out of South Africa and former Proteas captain Abraham Benjamin (AB) de Villiers has retired from cricket.
The 37-year-old De Villiers, who was born in Pretoria, made the announcement on Friday.
“It has been an incredible journey, but I have decided to retire from all cricket. Ever since the backyard matches with my older brothers, I have played the game with pure enjoyment and unbridled enthusiasm. Now, at the age of 37, that flame no longer burns so brightly,” De Villiers said.
The former Titans and Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman has thanked everybody who worked with him.
“I would like to thank every teammate, every opponent, every coach, every physio and every staff member who has travelled the same path and I am humbled by the support I have recieved in South Africa, in India, wherever I have played,” he said.
De Villiers played 114 Tests, 228 one day internationals and 78 Twenty20 matches for South Africa. He knocked 8765 Test runs, 9577 in ODIs and 1672 in T20s.
