Former South African title contender Mfusi Maxhayi has passed away after he was shot in Mdantsane on Monday morning. He was 35.
Though the details are still sketchy, we have learnt that Maxhayi, once trained by Boyboy Mpulampula at the Enothole Gym in Mdantsane, was allegedly shot dead by someone who is known in East London boxing circles.
Maxhayi was based in Johannesburg where he worked as a fitness trainer and had only come back to the Eastern Cape for the festive season.
Originally from Ilitha township in the Buffalo City Metro, Maxhayi is a former Eastern Cape, IBO International and World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental bantamweight champion.
In September 2015 Maxhayi lost on points to Bongani Mahlangu in his bid to win the South African junior-featherweight title. The fight was held at the Orient Theatre in East London.
Mfusi Maxhayi, eish a young talented and a person always loughing out loud and full of smiles.
RIP young man..
What a loss Tata. Just the other day we were sharing a cigarette. How unpredictable life is. Resting Power Tata.
