Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe has wished Mdantsane boxer Ludumo Lamati a speedy recovery following a ring incident in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Saturday evening.

Lamati was rushed to a Belfast hospital after he collapsed in his corner following a 12th round technical knockout loss to unbeaten Briton Nick Ball during a World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver featherweight title contest at the SSE Arena.

“On behalf of the provincial government, I would like to wish our boxer Ludumo Lamati a speedy recovery. He was on a quest to lift the name of not just the province or the country, but the continent on a higher pedestal like other boxing heroes of yesteryear. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this period,” Kontsiwe said in a statement on Monday.

This was the 31-year-old former South African and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) junior-featherweight champion’s first loss in 23 fights.
