The boxer who is earmarked to face off against Phumelela ‘The Truth’ Cafu in a vacant South African junior-bantamweight title fight in East London on Saturday, 16 December, is yet to sign his contract.
This was revealed by Umlazi-born boxer Mpilo Cele and his trainer Obed ‘123’ Gumede, who said they have been approached for a fight against Cafu, however they have not signed the contract yet.
“I can confirm that I have been approached to fight against Cafu. In fact, I have received a contract, but I’m yet to sign it. My coach and I have agreed that the purse is low and should be increased before we sign the contract,” Cele said.
Cele, who is rated number eight in the controversial October ratings, will, if he feels the money is right, go to fight against Cafu on the back of a technical knockout win over Musawenkosi Ndwandwe at the APN Portuguese Hall in Durban in August.
The 25-year-old Cele has won five fights and lost three compared to the unbeaten Cafu, who has nine victories and three draws.
Initially, Cafu was set to fight against Enathi Stelle, who is rated number two in the SA junior-bantamweight division. But negotiations collapsed after Stelle’s manager Andile Mshumpela didn’t accept a purse offered to his boxer.
