Argentine superstar Lionel Messi made history when he won the Ballon d’Or award for a record eighth time in Paris, France, on Monday evening.

Messi, who led Argentina to FIFA World Cup glory in November last year, beat serious competition from free scoring Manchester City forward Erling Halaand.

The 36-year-old Messi now plays for Inter Miami in the US Major League Soccer (MLS) after he joined them from Paris Saint Germain (PSG).

Meanwhile, Aitana Bonmatí walked away with the Women’s Ballon d’Or following her exploits in the Spanish women’s national team and her club Barcelona.

The 25-year-old played a massive role when the Spanish women’s national team won the Women’s World Cup this year.
