A recreational park named after slain former South African female boxing and karate champion Leighandre ‘Baby Lee’ Jegels is going to be officially opened on Thursday.
The Leighandre ‘Baby Lee’ Jegels Recreational Park is set to be opened by Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality Executive Mayor Princess Faku at the East London beach front.
Jegels, a former SA female flyweight and World Boxing Association (WBA) female junior-bantamweight titlist, was shot dead by a jealous boyfriend in East London in August 2019. She was 25 and unbeaten in nine fights at the time of her death.
Initially, it was suggested that the famous Orient Theatre be renamed after Jegels, but nothing came out of that suggestion.
