Mzuvukile ‘Old Bones’ Magwaza has transitioned seamlessly from being a boxer to trainer and is enjoying his new role as a boxing mentor.
The Duncan Village-born Magwaza, who is now based in Site C, Khayelitsha, notched up 22 wins with 13 stoppages, two losses and three draws.
And Magwaza led unbeaten Asekho Nocele from Mthatha to a seventh round stoppage victory over Lopez Maluleke in Cape Town last weekend.
“The transition has been very smooth because even before becoming a trainer I had been training my peers,” Magwaza remarked.
Even though Magwaza has embarked on a journey of being a trainer, he has insisted that he’s not done yet as a boxer.
“I’m not retired yet, I’m taking a break. I’m still training like a fighter,” the 33-year-old Magwaza said.
Magwaza’s boxing career stalled after he was shot in the leg by thugs, who robbed his Site C home in Khayelitsha early in 2018. He recovered and returned to action with an impressive second round stoppage win over Sanele Maduna in April 2022.
After that, Magwaza lost for the first time as a professional boxer as he was beaten by former South African junior-bantamweight champion Sabelo Ngebiyane. He then atoned for that defeat with a win over Nasiphi Mdlangazi.
Magwaza, however, lost for the second time in his career when he was defeated by Mexican boxer Bryan Mercado Vasquez in Mexico in October 2023. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
