An injury picked up by Liverpudlian, Brandon Lee Daord, has forced unbeaten Zimbabwean boxer, Ndabezinhle Phiri, to ease a bit on his intensive training.
Phiri had been sweating buckets while hitting the bags, preparing to face off against Daord in a vacant International Boxing Organisation (IBO) flyweight title fight in Liverpool, United Kingdom, on Saturday, 12 September.
However, the fight has been postponed owing to Daord picking up an injury while preparing to face the Bulawayo-born Phiri, who is the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) Africa flyweight champion.
“The preparations were going well until we got the news that his opponent is injured. It looks like they are gonna move the date to November. I’m very, very disappointed,” Phiri’s trainer, Manny Fernandes, said.
Phiri is rated number one by the IBO and is eighth in the WBC ratings. The 29-year-old Daord, who is the current WBC International flyweight titlist, is rated 24th by the IBO and is 15th in the World Boxing Organisation (WBO).
The 25-year-old Phiri has won all his 11 fights with five of those wins coming from knockouts. On the other hand, Daord has registered 12 victories with three stoppages. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
