Slain former world champion, Zolani ‘Last Born’ Tete, who was gunned down by unknown assailants in Mdantsane on Friday evening, will be laid to rest on Saturday next week.
This was disclosed by the erstwhile World Boxing Organisation (WBO) bantamweight and International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-bantamweight titlist’s manager, Mlandeli Tengimfene, on Saturday.
The 38-year-old Tete was shot dead outside his Mdantsane home in NU 17 while he was coming back from the gym on Friday evening.
“The funeral is on the 29th of August and will be held at the City Hall. And the memorial service is also going to be held at the City Hall on Wednesday, the 26th,” Tengimfene said.
Tete was due to make a come back on Sunday, 29 November, followimg the completion of a four-year ban in July.
Among the things Tete will be remembered for is the history he made when he stopped his South African compatriot, Siboniso Gonya, in 11 seconds during a WBO bantamweight title defence in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in November 2017.
Tete made a professional debut with a first round a technical knockout win over Andile Solani at the Orient Theatre in KuGompo City in May 2006. He then went to qin hia first seven professional fights by stoppages.
Between 2006 and 20122, Tete registered 29 wins with 22 stoppages and four losses.
