A funny sport that is boxing is “forcing” two friends, Zolisa Batyi and Likho Sigaba, to square up against each other in their quest for World Boxing Association (WBA) Global featherweight glory.

And given a choice, Batyi, a former South African featherweight champion, wouldn’t have taken the fight against his friend, Sigaba, with whom he has had a number of sparring sessions in the past. With losses in his last two fights, Batyi is now hoping to bounce back when he faces the unbeaten Sigaba at the Guild Theatre in KuGompo City on Sunday, 1 November.

“I’m fighting against Likho next month. I didn’t want to take the fight because Likho and I are friends. We know each other very well and we have had numerous sparring sessions together. I like Likho a lot, but this is business thus we have accepted the fight,” Batyi said.

Nxarhuni-based Batyi lost his last two fights to Ardy Katompa from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in August and Namibian, Mateus Heita, in May.

Batyi will take his professional record of 11 wins with six knockouts, five losses and a draw to the Sigaba fight. On the other hand, Sigaba has won all his nine fights with four of those wins coming from stoppages. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
