Welshman Joe Cordina stopped Kenichi Ogawa from Japan in the second round to win the International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-lightweight title at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales, on Saturday evening.

The 30-year-old Cordina, who is unbeaten in 15 fights, floored Ogawa with an overhand right to the chin to become the 13th world champion from Wales.

Ogawa was attempting to make his first defence of the title he won when he outpointed Azinga Fuzile in the United States last November.

With the win, Cordina improved his record to 15 wins and nine knockouts while Ogawa dropped to 26 victories (18 stoppages), two losses and a draw.

This was the second time the 34-year-old Ogawa lost by a knockout having first been stopped by his compatriot Yuki Miyoshi in August 2014.

Meanwhile, Cordina is the first Welshman to win a world title since Lee Selby dethroned Russian Evgeny Gradovich in May 2015.

Selby lost his IBF featherweight title to American boxer Josh Warrington in Elland Road, Leeds, United Kingdom in May 2018.
