Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has admitted that her team didn’t play well despite defeating Tunisia 1-0 in a Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final match at the Prince Heritier Moulay Al Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday evening.
Banyana striker Jermaine Seoposenwe scored the only goal of the match in the 15th minute. This win sent Banyana to the semi-finals and also to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament, which is going to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
“I thought we started very well then we stopped playing. I don’t know why. We kept encouraging them to play, we kept creating chances,” Ellis remarked.
“They felt the pressure, we tried to calm them down. We made elementary mistakes. I don’t know how many chances we didn’t take. At the end of the day, it wasn’t a good performance. We showed a lot of grit. We are going to the World Cup.”
Banyana are now going to face Zambia in the semi-finals on Monday next week while hosts Morocco take on Nigeria on the same day.
