Chippa United chairman Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi has promised to give the club’s new head coach Daine Klate all the support he needs this coming season.
Mpengesi appointed Klate as coach of the Gqeberha-based club after the former Bidvest Wits, Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United left winger did well with the Chilli Boys’ Diski Challenge team leading them to a fourth place finish.
“I believe in development and giving players and coaches an opportunity. We are happy with Daine Klate. We used to be the laughing stock in the MDC, but he turned things around for us and we have to reward him,” Mpengesi told SAfm’s Sport On.
“We are confident that next season will be our best season. We also hope that 60 percent of the players will come from the region.”
Mpengesi, who has a reputation of hiring and firing coaches at will, has also added that his main aim in the past was to make sure that the Chilli Boys remain in top-flight footbalI.
“Over the years I have realised that what’s important for us is to retain our status. We hope to start well,” Mpengesi said.
“We always give our coaches the first 10 games. Even his contract says he can’t be fired after 10 games. We will support him because this is a good story of a young coach. It’s time to show faith in young coaches now. We know it won’t be easy for him and nothing is guaranteed in football, but we have hope.”
Meanwhile, Mpengesi revealed during the interview with SAfm that the Chilli Boys are going to unveil their new players in Ngcobo on Wednesday.
The Chilli Boys open the 2022/2023 season with an away game against Matsatsantsa a Pitori at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Sunday, 7 August.
They will be coming up against their former coach Gavin Hunt, who got the chop after failing to produce results last season.
