Sphelele Myeza suffered his first professional loss when he was stopped by Matt Windle in Leeds, England, on Saturday evening.
Windle stopped Myeza in the 11th round to win the vacant Commonwealth junior-flyweight title at the Premier Banqueting Suites, Burmanstofts.
“We lost in the 11th round. Sphelele fought very well and we were gone with the points,” Myeza’s manager Michael Sediane said.
“Then the boy came very hard and got aggressive. Then Sphelele fell down. He managed to stand up and tried. But the boy became more aggressive and Sphelele couldn’t respond. Then the referee stopped the fight.”
According to Sediane, KwaMashu-born Myeza is going to get a rematch with Windle despite losing the fight by a stoppage.
“You will remember that Sphelele signed a two-year deal with these people here in the UK. The promoter felt like we should do a rematch. So we are coming back in February next year,” Sediane said.
Myeza has now dropped to eight wins and a loss while Windle improved to seven victories, four defeats and one draw. This was Birmingham-based Windle’s first stoppage since making his professional debut in December 2015.
