The Proteas launched a fight back as they tried to limit Australia, who knocked 145 runs for five at stumps in their first innings in the first Test at the Gabba in Brisbane on Saturday.
Travis Head, not out, gave Proteas bowlers hard time hitting 78 runs after facing 77 deliveries. Steven Smith scored 36 from 68 balls.
The Proteas batted first and were bowled out for 152 with Kyle Verrynne top scoring with 64 runs from 96 balls and Temba Bavuma scored 38 runs after he faced 70 deliveries.
Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada each picked up two wickets. Nortje gave away 37 runs in eight overs while Rabada leaked 50 in 11.1 overs.
On the other hand, Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc took three wickets each giving away 14 and 41 runs respectively.
