Stellenbosch FC might have beaten Chippa United 2-1 away at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Saturday afternoon, but their coach Steve Barker strongly believes that they were not on their best form.

This was Stellies’ second successive victory as they continue to move up the Premiership standings. They defeated Cape Town City 3-2 in a previous match.

“We have a young team. Consistency with the youngsters is always a challenge. We weren’t on our best. From a football point of view I think we were a better team,” Barker remarked.

The Cape Winelands side led 1-0 at half-time through their in-form striker Devin Titus’ goal.

“I thought first half we were the better team in terms of creating chances. Second half they came out really strong, credit to them,” the former AmaZulu and University of Pretoria coach said.

“First 15 minutes they put us on the back foot. They got their due reward. From that it became quite an open game. They had some breakaway chances, we had some transitional moments. We persevered. Magnificent win, great effort from the players, great commitment.”
