It looked like Banyana Banyana were going to hold their own after they scored first against Sweden, however, it was never to be as the Scandinavians defeated them 2-1 in a FIFA Women’s World Cup Group G match at the Wellington Regional Stadium, New Zealand, on Sunday.

Following a goalless first half, Banyana’s huge moment came when Hildah Magaia netted to give them a 1-0 lead. The goal came after Sweden goalkeeper Zecira Musovic failed to hold on to the ball following from Thembi Kgatlana’s attempt in the 48th minute.

It took the Swedes 17 minutes before they got the equaliser through Fridolina Rolfo’s goal following a cross from Johanna Kaneryd.

The Swedes took the lead when Amanda Ilestedt headed past Banyana goalkeeper Kaylin Swart off Kosovara Aslani’s corner in the 90th minute. The Swedes have now beaten Banyana four times with the other match ended in a draw.

Meanwhile, Banyana’s next match is against Argentina on Friday and they will face Italy in their last group stages encounter on Wednesday, 2 August.
