South African bantamweight champion Ronald ‘King’ Malindi passed away on Saturday afternoon after spending more than a month at a hospital in Johannesburg.

Malindi was admitted at the Helen Joseph Hospital after he was shot in Westbury, Johannesburg, early last month.

Sean Smith, who trained Malindi, said: “I received a call from his girlfriend telling me that Malindi had passed away. Apparently, he got pneumonia after he was shot last month. I feel very sad about his passing.”

Unbeaten in 19 fights, Malindi departed this world having successfully defended the SA title four times. He was only one win away from gaining outright ownership of the SA bantamweight belt.
