Boxing champion Asemahle ‘The Predator’ Wellem has made yet another about turn as he is not going to travel to Russia and fight against unbeaten Russian boxer Pavel Silyagin anymore.
Instead, Wellem has opted to return to Tanzania for a fight against yet another unbeaten boxer in Selemani Kidunda on Friday, 1 March. Wellem will be making the first defence of his World Boxing Foundation (WBF) Intercontinental super-middleweight title against the 40-year-old Kidunda.
“I’m not going to fight in Russia anymore. We couldn’t agree on certain issues. I’m now going to fight in Tanzania. I will be defending my WBF title against Selemani Kidunda,” Wellem, who is trained by forner South African bantamweight champion Phumzile Matyhila, said.
This is going to be the Chintsa-born Wellem’s second visit to the East African country in less than a year. In his first visit to Tanzania, Wellem won the WBF title after he outpointed Tanzanian boxer Twaha Kassimu Rubaha in July last year.
Wellem, the reigning SA super-middleweight champion, was reportedly going to be promoted by Golden Gloves, but changed his mind and signed a new two-year contract with Happy Tewo’s Tewo Promotions earlier this month.
