Akani Sambu looks likely to become Yanga ‘Showtime’ Sigqibo’s first opponent now that the Duncan Village boxer has moved up to the bantamweight division from junior-bantamweight.
Sigqibo, a former SA junior-bantamweight champion, announced recently that he had decided to move up to the bantamweight division after he spent more than seven years fighting in the junior-bantanweight.
“Akani has been challenged by Yanga Sigqibo. We have been offered the fight and we have no problem even though we are yet to confirm it. We will confirm it once all the parties have confirmed,” Sambu’s manager Hlonipha Maboko said.
The 30-year-old Sambu outpointed Joshua Studdard when they fought for the World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental bantamweight title in October last year.
And after losing to Mpumelelo Tshabalala, who is the reigning SA junior-flyweight champion, in his professional debut in October 2017, Sambu has done well since. He went on to register five victories with three stoppages and a draw.
