Egyptian giants Al Ahly, who are coached by South African Pitso Mosimane, knocked Mamelodi Sundowns out of the CAF Champions League when they beat them 3-1 on aggregate.
The two sides played to a 1-1 draw in the second leg, which was held at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville west of Pretoria on Saturday afternoon. Al Ahly defender Yasser Ibrahim put the Red Devils ahead in the 11th minute. However, that lead was cancelled when Mosa Lebusa headed into the net to make it 1-1 for the Brazilians in the 30th minute.
The Red Devils, who are the defending champions, came to South Africa carrying a 2-0 lead from the first leg, which was played in Cairo, Egypt, last weekend. This was Mosimane’s first visit to South Africa since taking over as Red Devils coach more than six months ago.
Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time following a 4-3 aggregate win over Tanzanian side Simba SC.
Simba beat Amakhosi 3-0 at home on Saturday, but Chiefs’ 4-0 win in the first leg helped them reach the last four.
