A hand injury picked up at training by Phikelelani ‘Stinger’ Khumalo has resulted in the postponement of his South African middleweight title defence against his KwaZulu-Natal homeboy Yunus S’phiwe Mbhele.
Khumalo was due to trade fdtic blows with Mbhele in his first SA title defence in Durban on Saturday next week. However, the fight has since been postponed to a later date owing to Khumalo’s right hand injury.
“The fight has been postponed after I got injured while sparring on Friday last week. I only realised it the following day that my hand was injured,” Khumalo said.
“I went to the doctor who gave me a three weeks off after examining the injury. My right hand is still swollen and it’s very painful.”
Having a record of eight wins with five knockouts and two losses, Khumalo annexed the national title after he dethroned John Bopape at the Estcourt Town Hall, KwaZulu-Natal, in March this year. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
