Western Cape sport is mourning following the passing away of former professional boxer and boxing promoter  Mzamo William ‘Smokin Joe’ Mandyu.

‘Shamba’ as Mandyu was known in Western Cape boxing circles, was one of the most knowledgeable personalities in South African fistic sport having promoted a number of bouts including Vuyani Bungu’s clash against Fransie Badenhorst.

A man with a sense of homour, Mandyu together with former players and administrators were honoured by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport in 2018.

Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Anroux Marais capped Mandyu, a one time boxing trainer, at the ceremony, which was held at the Kronenburg Estate in Paarl recognising his work in developing sport in the province.
