An injury picked up at training has forced the cancellation of Charlton ‘Baby Pain’ Malajika’s World Boxing Council (WBC) International bantamweight title against David Mwale in Zambia on Saturday, 27 December.
The 24-year-old Malajika, who has registered nine wins with four knockouts and a loss, got injured while preparing to meet the unbeaten Zambian boxer.
“Charlton Malajika’s fight is off. He tore ligaments in his knee while training. This is unfortunate because the kid was super fit,” Malajika’s trainer Manny Fernandes confirmed.
Malajika, who is the younger brother to current International Boxing Organisation (IBO) junior-bantamweight champion Ricardo Malajika, has already fought three times this year.
The IBO Youth bantamweight champion registered victories over Gcina Makhoba from KwaZulu-Natal as well as Filipino boxers RV Deniega and Froilan Saludar. All three fights were held at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
