Ntethelelo ‘Baby G’ Nkosi has said that he’s not interested in fighting for the South African junior-welterweight title he once held even though he will make a final decision after a meeting with his manager Damien Durandt.
Nkosi relinquished the national title when he opted to fight in the WBC Grand Prix in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He lost in the semi-finals to eventual junior-welterweight division winner Carlos Alfonso Utria Lopez from Colombia.
“Truly speaking, I’m not interested in fighting for the SA title. I see no reason to fight for the title. But I still have to sit down with my manager Damien Durandt about the matter,” Nkosi remarked.
The SA junior-welterweight title seems to be jinxed as it has never been contested since Nkosi vacated it earlier this year. Aphiwe Boyiya was due to have fought for the title against Sipho Mahlangu in May, but the fight didn’t go ahead after Sibusiso Zingange’s handlers objected to it on the grounds that he was rated second while Mahlangu was eighth.
Then, Boyiya and Sibusiso Zingange were meant to have fought for the crown, but their fight kept being postponed since July. The continuous postponements forced Zingange, a former SA junior-lightweight champion, to throw in the towel, declaring that he’s no longer interested in fighting for the vacant national junior-welterweight title anymore. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
