Popularly known as Kosie Smith in boxing circles, former South African light-heavyweight champion Johannes Jacobus Adriaan Smith has passed away.
Smith, the father to well known boxing trainers, Peter Smith, George Smith and Sean Smith, won the SA light-heavyweight title a number of times in a career which started in February 1968 until his last fight in February 1979.
By the time Smith hung up his gloves he had a professional record of 31 victories with 26 knockouts, 19 defeats and one draw.
While he was still on top of his game, Smith challenged for the World Boxing Association (WBA) light-heavyweight title and lost to Argentine boxer Victor Galindez at the Rand Stadium in Johannesburg in October 1976.
