Almost 14 years since he was fired as Bafana Bafana coach, Pitso Mosimane, is back at the helm, succeeding Belgian-born Hugo Broos whose five-year contract expired last month after taking the SouthAfricanseniormen’s national team to the FIFA World Cup kncokoit stages for the first time ever.
Mosimane’s appointment as the new Bafana coach was approved by the national executive committee of the South African Football Association (SAFA) at an extra-ordinary meeting held at SAFA House in Johannesburg on Saturday.
“The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week,” SAFA president Danny Jordaan said.
The 62-year-old Mosimane, who is the most successful coach in South Africa by far, once coached Bafana between 2010 and 2012. He was fired after Bafana struggled during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Mosimane has won three CAF Champions League trophies – two with Egyptian giants, Al Ahly, and once with Mamelodi Sundowns.
