With his promoter, Brad Norman, saying that they are still waiting for Boxing South Africa (BSA) to approve his challenge for the South African welterweight title held by Phaphama Rhonorhono, Wasim ‘Kleurling’ Chellan, has decided to look elsewhere.

Chellan has lined up a vacant African Boxing Union (ABU) welterweight title fight against Kenyan boxer, Martin Ashirenje Achebi, at the Fourways Farmers Market on Friday, 30 October.

“Yes, he is fighting for the vacant ABU welterweight championship on Friday, 30 October. We are still waiting for BSA to comeback to us on our challenge request,” Norman from Warrior Ascent Promotions said.

This is going to be Chellan’s fourth fight since he was stopped in the second round by Mthatha-born Rhonorhono when they fought for the then vacant SA welterweight title in September last year. Cape Town-based Chellan won his last three fights by stoppages.

Meanwhile, Rhonorhono was due to have defended the national title against Jabulani Makhense, but their fight fell through on two occasions.

The second time it was called off after Makhense failed to make the required weight before their scheduled fight at Event City Middelburg in Mpumalanga late in August.

And failure to deposit purse monies also resulted in Rhonorhono’s fight against Makhense, which was going to be held in Malamulele early in August, being cancelled. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
