Wasim ‘Kleurling’ Chellan still dreams of trading blows with his conqueror, Phaphama Rhonorhono, who shocked him in front of his Cape Town fans in September last year.

Since losing to Rhonorhono in a vacant South African welterweight title contest, Chellan has done exceptionally well, registering four straight knockout wins. And his latest victory was a fourth round stoppage of Kenyan boxer, Martin Asherenji Achebi, at the Fourways Farmers Market in Johannesburg last Thursday.

“With regards to the rematch, that is solely up to my promotional team. I would like the fight to happen because I still want to become a South African champion. Not necessarily because Rhonorhono is the champion at the moment. It’s just that one of my dreams is to become a South African champion. I think there’s a fight that was offered, but it fell through,” Chellan said.

On winning the ABU title, Chellan said: “It has not really sunk in that I’m the ABU champion. However, it feels good that the title stayed in South Africa. I came up against a decent opponent. And I would have loved if the fight had gone further in the rounds.”

Following the win over Achebi, Cape Town-based Chellan improved his professional record to 13 wins with eight knockouts and two losses. Achebi, on the other hand, dropped to nine wins with seven stoppages and two losses. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
