Mamelodi Sundowns dumped Kaizer Chiefs out of the MTN8 beating them 2-1 on penalties in a quarter-final match played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Sunday evening.
The two sides drew 2-2 after extra time and forced the match to be decided on spot kicks.
Sundowns goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene saved four penalties – Daniel Cardoso, Samir Nurkovic, Mulomowandau Mathoho and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo – while his teammates Pavol Safranka and Lakay missed. Mweene and Themba Zwane netted Sundowns’ penalties with Keagan Dolly converting for Chiefs.
Meanwhile, Sundowns raced to an early lead when Peter Shalulile opened the scoring after he headed home from Lakay’s cross in the 10th minute and Zwane doubled the score 13 minutes later.
Bernard Parker pulled one back for Amakhosi in the 38th minute. Khama Billiat equalised with a beautiful goal in the 59th minute.
