Port Elizabeth-based Premier Division club Chippa United have been hit by COVID-19 as their assistant coach Siya Gwambi, goalkeepers Mlungisi Mazibuko and Ismail Watenga have tested positive for the deadly virus.

As a result, Gwambi didn’t travel with the Chilli Boys to the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville for Wednesday’s DStv Premiership match against SuperSport United. That left coach Chilli Boys coach
Daniel ‘Dance’ Malesela with no assistant.

Mazibuko and Watenga’s positive results forced Malesela to call up Kwanele Nkabi from the club’s reserve side. The 20-year-old Nkabi was among the Chilli Boys’ substitutes during the match against Matsatsantsa.

The trio’s positive results came after the Chilli Boys conducted their routine tests a few days ago.

Meanwhile, the Chilli Boys are the second Premier Division club to be hit by COVID-19 this week.

Cape Town City travelled to Dobsonville Stadium for their match against Swallows FC without Mpho Makola, Thabo Nodada and Craig Martins, who were left behind in the Mother City after testing positive for COVID-19.
