Thabiso Kutumela and Thibang Phete have been left behind as Bafana Bafana travelled to Zimbabwe on Wednesday for Friday’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Warriors at the National Sports Stadium in Harare at 15h00.
Kutumela, who plays for Mamelodi Sundowns, and Phete of Belenenses SAD didn’t travel after they tested positive for COVID-19.
“Unfortunately, we have to report the two positive cases that we’ve got in camp,” Bafana Bafana team medic Doctor Tshepo Molobi revealed.
“Remember, we did a round of testing the entire team yesterday (Tuesday) and Wednesday morning. We started getting results last night (Tuesday). The earliest was Thibang Phete and it also emerged that Thabiso Kutumela tested positive.”
Tests were done on the entire Bafana Bafana team comprising of 40 members, including medical and backroom staff.
“Of the 40 tests, those are the two that came back positive. I can safely say for now with the results we have, everybody else has tested negative,” Molobi said.
The next round of testing is going to be done in Zimbabwe on Wednesday evening.
