Mamelodi Sundowns left-back Lyle Lakay reckons that his personal award is the reflection of his team’s success.

Lakay walked away with the Defender of the Season award on Sunday following a brilliant season with the all-conquering Brazilians.

“I’m a team player. If I get a personal award, it’s the reflection of the team. If the team wins, personal awards will come afterwards,” the former Cape Town City defender said.

Cape Town-born Lakay strongly believes that winning the award is going to motivate him to work harder next season.

“It was a surprise for me to be nominated. It’s a motivation to do better next season,” Lakay, who turns 31 in August, said.

Lakay is in camp with his Bafana Bafana teammates ahead of Thursday’s away Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana leave for Morocco via Doha, Qatar, at 20h50 on Saturday and will land in Casablanca at 13h20 on Sunday. They will then proceed to Rabat by bus.
