Champion Switzerland-born tennis player Roger Federer announced his retirement from the sport on Thursday.

The 41-year-old Federer has ruled world tennis since turning professional 24 years ago. He won 103 ATP singles titles including 20 Grand Slams. 

Federer, who was born in Basel, Switzerland, counts eight Wimbledon titles among his gongs. He also won five Australian Open titles, five US Open and one French Open title. 

He also won a doubles gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and singles silver at the London Games in 2012.
