The promotional ‘marriage’ between current South African lightweight champion Lusanda ‘Mexican’ Komanisi and his promoter Happy Tewo of Tewo Boxing Promotions is on the verge of collapse.
So strained is the relationship between the boxer and the promoter that Komanisi is asking Boxing South Africa (BSA) to help him terminate his promotional contract with Tewo Boxing Promotions.
Problems between Komanisi and Tewo started to surface after the former International Boxing Organisation (IBO) featherweight champion discovered that he was not billed to fight in Tewo Boxing Promotions’ Sunday, 11 December tournament scheduled for the Orient Theatre in East London.
Tewo told Ink Sport that he gave Komanisi a contract to sign for a fight against former SA featherweight titlist Azinga Fuzile, who is now set to face off with Mexican boxer Rene Tellez Giron in an IBO Intercontinental lightweight title fight at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban next month.
“We gave him a contract and he never signed it. He was supposed to have signed to fight against Azinga Fuzile. Azinga is now going to fight in Durban. Komanisi is going to defend his title in February next year,” Tewo said.
Mdantsane-born Komanisi has, however, refuted what the Tewo Boxing Promotions boss said and he insisted that he wants to end his relationship with Tewo.
“I was told in passing about a possible fight with Azinga. I have never received a contract. I called and texted Tewo, but I have received no response from him. This relationship is over. I have since engaged BSA in an effort to get out of my contract with Tewo. I’m unhappy with how I have been treated. Anyway, it’s good that I will be fighting in February,” Komanisi said.
Komanisi fought three times – against Siphenathi Qampi, Sinethemba Bam and Kabelo Bikitsha – under Tewo’s promotional outfit. His only two fights this year, which were against Amani Bariki from Tanzania and Tshifhiwa Munyai, were promoted by Mama Rocks Promotions and Golden Gloves respectively.
