Day three of the second Test match between the Proteas and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was brought to an early end by rain on Wednesday. 

At stumps, the Proteas were 15 for one after Dean Elgar’s wicket fell for a duck. Elgar was caught by Alex Carey after he was bowled by Pat Cummins. 

Sarel Erwee who has seven runs from 21 deliveries and Theuns de Bruyn on six in 18 balls are going to resume batting on Thursday. 

The Proteas are trailing by 371 runs after Australia declared on 575 for eight with a lead of 386. Carey scored a maiden century when he knocked 111 off 149 balls before he was caught and bowled by Marco Jansen.
