The South African football fraternity is under a dark cloud following the passing away of young Stellenbosch FC defender-cum-midfielder Oshwin Andries on Saturday.

Reports coming from the Cape Winelands say the former South African Under-20 captain, who got promoted to the Stellies first team this season, passed away on Saturday following complications after he was stabbed last weekend.

“It is with deep sadness that Stellenbosch FC has learned of the untimely passing of promising young defender, Oshwin Andries. The club is not in a position to provide further information at this stage and asks that his family’s privacy is respected in this difficult time of bereavement,” a Stellies statement said on Saturday evening.

“Andries was a gifted young footballer who graduated from the SFC Academy to make his professional debut at the age of 18. He later became the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the DStv Premiership. His presence, both on the pitch and off it, will be sorely missed. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Stellenbosch FC are with his family, friends and loved ones. A further statement will follow in due course.”

Andries from Klapmuts made his professional debut when Stellies were beaten 3-1 by Orlando Pirates. He was due to celebrate his 20th birthday on the 24th of this month.
