Stellenbosch FC striker Iqraam Rayners scored twice in less than 10 minutes to lead Stellies to the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup following a 2-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday evening.

The Brazilians took the lead following Lee Langeveldt’s own goal six minutes before the half-time break. The ball bounced on Langeveldt’s legs after it had hit the woodwork following a shot from Aubrey Modiba.

A back pass blunder by Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena resulted in Rayners equalising for the Cape Winelands side in the 48th minute. Rayners latched on to Mokwena’s back pass and rounded an advancing Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango before slotting the ball into an empty net.

The 27-year-old Rayners completed his brace in the 57th minute after he raced towards goals with Sundowns players on pursuit before he beat Onyango for the second time in this match. That was the former SuperSport United forward’s sixth goal in the Nedbank Cup.

Meanwhile, this was Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena’s first loss since he took over as head coach of the Brazilians in October last year.
