New Zealand broke a 32-year hoodoo when they won their first World Cup match beating favourites Norway 1-0 at Eden Park on Thursday.

Hannah Wilkinson sent Eden Park into a frenzy when she beat Norwegian goalkeeper Aurora Mikalsen to give New Zealand the lead off Jacqui Hand’s cross three minutes into the second half.

The 31-year-old Melbourne City forward had been looking for the goal since the beginning of the match.

New Zealand, who are ranked 26th in the world, had a chance to increase the lead when they were awarded a penalty. However, Ria Percival’s penalty hit the woodwork in the 90th minute.
