Erstwhile world boxing champion Dingaan ‘The Rose of Soweto’ Thobela has passed away. He was 57.

Ink Sport has gathered that Soweto-born Thobela’s lifeless body was found at his Langlaagte, Johannesburg, flat on Monday. And it looked like he had been dead for a few days by the time it was discovered that he was gone.

Thobela, a former South African junior-lightweight champion, won the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) lightweight title after he defeated Mexican Mauricio Aceves in September 1990.

His thirst for more glory saw him going all the way to win the World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight crown following a victory over American boxer Tony Lopez in June 1993.

Thobela was not done yet as he went on to win the World Boxing Council (WBC) super-middleweight title after he defeated Glenn Catley from the United Kingdom at Carnival City in Brakpan in September 2000.
