Asemahle ‘The Predator’ Wellem is fast becoming a serial offender as he has once again shown Boxing South Africa (BSA) the middle finger, travelling to fight in Tanzania without being cleared.

This is the second time in less than six months that Wellem has sneered at BSA’s rules and regulations to go fight in Tanzania without obtaining a clearance. The Chintsa-born Wellem did the same last December when he went to fight against Tanzanian Frank Shagembe Katwila in a bout he lost.

Instead of coming down hard on Wellem for violating its rules and regulations, BSA gave him a slap on the wrist.

Now the reigning SA super-middleweight champion is already in Tanzania where he’s fighting against Tanzanian Jacob Maganga in a light-heavyweight bout in Dar-Es-Salaam this coming Saturday.

“Wellem has been here for weeks now. He’s fighting on Saturday,” a Tanzania-based Ink Sport source confirmed.

According to clause 16 (2) (e), there shoud be confirmation that the boxer will be accompanied by his or her manager or agent or that appropriate arrangements have been made for the boxer to be accompanied while abroad by a person, who is duly licensed with the boxing commission of the country in which the boxer will fight abroad.

And by travelling to fight in Tanzania without a BSA clearance, Wellem has violated clause 16 (1) of the regulations, which says “any boxer who wishes to fight abroad shall either personally or through his or her agent or manager apply in writing to Boxing SA, at least 21 days prior to his or her proposed departure from the Republic, for authorisation to do so.”

Acting BSA chief executive officer Tsholofelo Lejaka said: “BSA didn’t clear Wellem and neither did it receive any request from him.”

Ink Sport can reveal that Wellem has been in Tanzania for almost four weeks now and he travelled alone.
