Mamelodi Sundowns have made history yet again as they won the CAF Champions League trophy for the second time after they defeated AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate.
Having won 1-0 in the first leg held at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria last weekend, the 2016 champions earned their second star after they drew 1-1 with the Moroccans at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday evening.
And in the second leg, the Moroccans shot to the lead when Mohamed Rabie Hrimat beat Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams from the penalty spot five minutes before the half-time break. Match referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan from Somalia awarded the Moroccans a penalty after Divine Lunga had fouled Reda Slim inside the box.
Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena’s thunderous strike from a Tashreeq Matthews assist levelled matters for the Tshwane giants in referee’s added time.
AS FAR had an opportunity to score their second goal, but Hrimat’s penalty was saved by Williams in the 77th minute. The penalty was awarded after VAR confirmed that Williams had fouled Youssef El Fahli inside the box.
