Just over a month after she won the then vacant International Boxing Organisation (IBO) female junior-lightweight title, Bernice ‘The Badger’ Ferreira is set for another big fight.
The former South African female junior-lightweight champion has signed to square up against current World Boxing Council (WBC) titlist Caroline Veyre from Canada. The two lasses are scheduled to trade blows in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States of America (USA) on Sunday, 16 August, South African time.
“All I want to do is fight. It’s all moving so fast and I sometimes can’t believe it. But I want to fight the best and this is a great fight and opportunity to prove that I am one of the best,” Ferreira remarked.
Ferreira annexed the IBO female junior-lightweight crown after she outpointed Malawian Ellen Simwaka at the Wild Coast Sun in Bizana, Eastern Cape, earlier last month.
Her manager Colin ‘Nomakanjani’ Nathan said: “It hasn’t been easy. But we finally got there. The initial offer was low, then they countered, which was still too low. I threw a number at them, which I figured they would say no to. But about two weeks later, they came back with the figure that the fighter and the rest of the team were happy with.”
