Following years of holding on to the South African cruiserweight title with no one challenging him, Thabiso ‘The Rock’ Mchunu has decided to relinquish the national crown.

The KwaXimba-born Mchunu, a former World Boxing Council (WBC) cruiserweight title contender, had been an SA titlist since he defeated Johnny Muller in June 2017. He defended the title only once, a win over Thomas Ootshuizen in December 2018.

“Boxing South Africa (BSA) has officially received and accepted formal notice from the camp of legendary cruiserweight boxer, Thabiso Mchunu, confirming his decision to relinquish his South African cruiserweight title with immediate effect,” Boxing South Africa (BSA) said in a statement.

“The national championship in this division has remained inactive since it was last contested in December 2018, primarily due to a lack of available and qualified contenders ready to step up and challenge the formidable champion.”

Mchunu’s manager Sean Smith wrote to BSA on Friday informing the fistic regulator that his boxer had decided to vacate the SA title.

“Mr Mchunu has held the title with distinction and has represented South African boxing at the highest level throughout his career,” Smith said.
