Unhappy with the outcome of the fight, Andile ‘Black Buffalo’ Mshumpela has petitioned Boxing South Africa (BSA) to review the bout between his boxer, Okuhle Mthi, and Nozwelethu Mathontsi.
After six rounds of action, Mathontsi was announced as the winner by a majority decision much to the shock of boxing fans and Mshumpela, who has since applied to BSA for the review of the fight.
“I am not happy with the results of the fight between Okuhle Mthi and Nozwelethu Mathontsi. In my eyes and the majority of the people who were watching it concur with that Okuhle Mthi did enough to win,” Mshumpela said.
“It is a pity that Okuhle Mthi’s boxing record is being tainted by the judges, who are not doing their work diligently. I believe that different judges will see Okuhle Mthi winning by unanimous points decision.”
Mshumpela added: “We have been challenging Mathontsi for her SA title and that never came to fruition after we submitted numerous challenge forms. The delay in producing and reading of the score cards after Mthi’s fight against Mathontsi made it clear that the results were being cooked in favour of the defeated Nozwelethu Mathontsi.”
Mathontsi, who won the South African female junior-flyweight title in June 2014, has not defended it since she defeated Owethu Rula during her fourth defence in December 2023. On the other hand, it was the second time that Mthi and Mathontsi fought with Mshumpela’s Mthatha-born boxer winning the first fight at KuGompo City’s Orient Theatre in December 2024. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
