Mamelodi Sundowns are the new MTN8 champions after they whipped Orlando Pirates 2-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday evening.
The Tshwane giants took an early lead when Teboho Mokoena beat Pirates goalkeeper, Sipho Chaine, off a Thabang Matuludi back heel assist in the 12th minute.
And the Buccaneers had an opportunity to level matters in the 62nd minute. However, Ronwen Williams proved equal to the task as he denied Pirates by saving a penalty from Ghampani Lungu after Mokoena had fouled Yanela Mbuthuma.
Iqraam Rayners netted the Brazilians’ second from the penalty spot in referee’s added time. Match referees, Abongile Tom, awarded Sundowns the penalty after Siyanda Ndlovu was fouled inside the box.
Sundowns’ victory meant that the African champions snapped the Buccaneers’ dominance in the MTN8. Pirates had won the MTN8 trophy in four successive seasons.
