Malawian boxer Ellen Simwaka avenged her 2017 December loss to Sharadene Fortuin when she defeated the Eastern Cape boxer at The Galleria in Johannesburg on Thursday evening.
Simwaka won the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Africa female bantamweight title by split decision with Simon Mokadi scoring the fight 98-91 and Tony Nyangiwe 95-94 for the Malawian while Sylvia Mokaila had Fortuin winning by 95-94.
The new champion took the fight to Fortuin from the first gong. It was clear that Simwaka was out to avenge her loss to Fortuin.
After keeping the Eastern Cape fighter under pressure, Simwaka decked Fortuin with a powerful right hand in the ninth round.
This was Fortuin’s second career loss and her first defeat since losing to Bukiwe Nonina in a South African female bantamweight title fight in September 2013.
