Former world champion Xolisani ‘Nomeva’ Ndongeni has given credit to his trainer Mzamo ‘Chief’ Njekanye following his win over Filipino boxer Reymond Yanong at The Galleria in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Thursday evening.
KwaBhaca-born Ndongeni put up a dominant performance against Yanong before cruising to victory during their junior-welterweight 10 rounds bout.
All three judges – Riaan Janse van Rensburg (97-93) Siyabulela Mani (99-92) and Toto Shweni (100-91) – nodded in agreement giving Ndongeni a unanimous decision victory.
“Nomeva is back with the Chief Factor. Chief Mzamo Njekanye made me. Today he’s still in my corner,” the former International Boxing Organisation (IBO) lightweight champion said.
Ndongeni was ushered into professional boxing by Njekanye in May 2010. He left Njekanye for Colin Nathan’s Hot Box Gym in Johannesburg in 2015.
He, however, returned to Njekanye early last year even though they live in two different cities. Ndongeni stays in Johannesburg while Njekanye is based in Duncan Village, East London.
“I can be a world champion any time. I showed that I can box, I can fight. I can do everything in the ring,” Ndongeni remarked.
The 32-year-old Ndongeni has now stretched his professional record to 30 wins with 17 knockouts and two defeats.
